Fraud

Starion Financial has safeguards in place for your complete security when banking online:

Your password: Your secret password allows only you to review personal information about your account.

Encryption software: Encryption software scrambles information that you're viewing online, so it can't be intercepted and read by someone else. All online banking and bill pay sessions are encrypted.

Starion Financial is dedicated to protecting your personal privacy. We have stringent privacy policies in place and have instituted bank-wide measures to see that they're strictly observed. We protect your privacy and will always be happy to answer your internet or personal security questions!

We recommend that you use online banking from your home or other private computer and not on public or "internet café" computers, as these public computers are more frequent targets for online fraud.

You're safe and sound when banking online with us, but there are other kinds of scams we're telling about for your protection. Knowledge of these online scams will prepare you to bank online just as safely as in our bank branches at Fargo, Bismarck, Mandan, Oakes, Ellendale and Middleton.

Be Wary!

You wouldn't tell a stranger on the street your private information would you? Don't let your guard down when online.

"Phishing" scams are a widely-used email scam. You get an email out of the blue posing to be from your bank, asking you to "verify" information. Do not answer them.

We will never send emails asking personal or financial information. We'll never ask you to click on a special link to give us information. Do not click on the email link. It may direct you to a fraudulent website where crooks work to steal your personal information.

We do not routinely communicate with customers by email. If you get an email claiming it's from us, call us to confirm it. It's that easy.

Look again!

Web spoofing involves an attacker sending a "shadow copy" of a legitimate website. They copy the artwork from the site so it looks just like a trusted bank or store site.

People who fall victim and use the counterfeit site are giving away data, including passwords or account numbers, to the attacker.

If a website appears suddenly in an email or as a pop-up window - asking you to enter information - stay away. Do not use an email link sent to you to access any financial or government website. Instead, always type or paste the URL into a web browser window to get to legitimate sites.

Starion Financial will never send an email asking customers to send personal information, passwords or personal identification numbers (PINs) via email or pop-up windows.

You can protect yourself by activating a pop-up blocker, installing anti-virus software, scanning your computer for spyware regularly, avoid downloading programs from unknown sources, and disconnecting from the internet when not in use. Be cautious about opening email attachments and using links to go to sites.

Always go to our website by typing www.starionfinancial.com directly into the browser address bar.

Prevent identity theft at home, when you shop and when you travel
Modern times call for new tactics. Today's crooks want to steal your personal information to get credit cards in your name, buy items or borrow money in your name. Common sense will keep you safe.

Protect yourself from identity theft with these important measures:

Open your bank statement every month and look it over carefully. Review credit card statements as soon as you receive them to see whether there are unauthorized or suspicious charges.

Guard your financial information. Do not give your checking and credit card numbers, your social security number, or other private information unless you know the person or organization you are dealing with.

Report lost or stolen checks immediately. Call your nearest Starion Financial branch or customer service at 663-6434 or (888) 258-6050 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Shred credit card offers you get in the mail. Never carry your Social Security Card. Cancel unused credit cards and limit your risk.

Safe deposit boxes are an excellent place to store a copy of your credit card numbers, your Social Security Card and other private and valuable documents.

Request free credit reports. A credit report contains information about you and your credit/payments history and helps you see if someone is applying for credit in your name. Get your credit report at: http://annualcreditreport.com/, or call 877-322-8228.

You can also contact the credit reporting companies:

Equifax http://www.equifax.com/ 800-685-1111

Experian http://www.experian.com/ 888-397-3742

Transunion http://www.transunion.com/ 800-888-4213

You may get one report from each company free each year, allowing you to stagger them over the course of one year to keep track of your status with a free report every four months.
