Fraud Prevention Tips

Here are a few fraud prevention tips that can help you protect yourself:

  • Carry only necessary information with you. Leave your Social Security card and unused credits cards at home in a secure location
  • Make photocopies (front and back) of vital information you carry regularly and store them in a secure place. Then, if your purse or wallet is lost or stolen, contact information and account numbers are readily available
  • Do not give out your Social Security number unless absolutely necessary
  • Never give out financial or personal information to anyone via the telephone, email or any other method of communication where you don't know who they are
  • Replace paper invoices, statements, bills, account statements and checks with electronic versions if possible
  • Shred documents containing personal or financial information before discarding. Many fraud incidents happen as a result of mail and garbage theft
  • Review your credit report at least once a year, looking for suspicious or unknown transactions. You can get a free credit report once a year from each of the three major credit bureaus at www.annualcreditreport.com. You can obtain a copy at any time directly from:
  • Subscribe to a credit monitoring service
  • Retrieve your incoming mail right away. Place outgoing mail in a Postal Service mailbox, instead of your home mailbox, to reduce the chance of theft
  • Know your billing and statement cycles. Contact the company’s customer service department if you stop receiving your regular bill or statement
  • Never pay in advance for services or products sight unseen
  • Promises of wealth and guarantees to instantly double or triple your money are scams
  • Don’t donate to an alleged charity in response to a phone call; it is difficult to verify legitimacy over the phone
